Uncover lives, loves and legends - The Castle Trail
Aberdeen City and Shire is home to more castles per acre than anywhere else in the United Kingdom - nearly 300, but then who's counting? Why not incorporate a visit to some of our enchanting castles into your stay in Aberdeenshire.
The easiest way to discover these beautiful properties is to follow the signposted Castle Trail around Aberdeenshire. Scotland's only Castle Trail in the heart of Aberdeenshire is home to a selection of thirteen of the world's most unique castles, ranging from the imposing Castle Fraser to the magnificent Fyvie Castle, home to ghosts, legends and folklore.
You don't need to venture far out of the city before you stumble upon some spectacular castles. Crathes Castle is one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Scotland and, situated only 15 miles west of Aberdeen City, the castle is well worth a visit. Its gardens in full bloom during the summer are a great place to take a relaxing stroll or have tea and cake in the café.
Further afield, spend a luxurious night at the Kildrummy Castle Hotel, a glorious country house hotel overlooking the ruins of Kildrummy Castle and surrounded by splendid gardens.
Beyond the Castle Trail don't miss the Royal residence of Balmoral in Royal Deeside, or the incredible Dunnottar Castle, by Stonehaven. Impressively perched on sea cliffs, Dunnottar Castle is surrounded by beaches and wildlife and is featured in the movie Hamlet starring Mel Gibson. After a walk around the castle, take a stroll along the cliffs to the seaside town of Stonehaven for a bite to eat in the lovely Boathouse Café or enjoy a heartier meal in the more traditional Ship Inn on the harbour front.
