Surf Scotland's rolling waves

Surf Scotland's rolling waves

Scotland has fast-developed a reputation as one of the best destinations for surfing in Europe. Blessed with big waves and beautiful beaches, Scotland has lots to offer surfers of all levels. But perhaps the best attraction is you will often find yourself with the beach to yourself!

Some of the best spots for surfing are found on the east coast between East Lothian near Edinburgh and Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders. Thanks to spacious, quiet beaches and waves that roll rather than crash, beginner surfers will find the ideal playground.

Other hotspots include the rugged beaches of the northern coast and the fabulously scenic islands of Tiree and Lewis in the west. On Lewis there's a dreamy white beach in almost every direction so no matter where the weather is coming from you'll always find a perfect spot for surfing.

There are a number of excellent surf shops near the best surf spots and with a widening range of surf schools, surfers of all ages and abilities can easily pick up the basics during a day or weekend course.

Surfing in Scotland is a truly exhilarating experience, once you've tried it you'll want to give it a go again and again. Hawaii it ain't, but once the first rush of cold is over, it makes little difference! And you can look forward to rewarding yourself with some fine Scottish fare, enjoy a hearty meal in a cosy East Lothian pub or head to Edinburgh for a little bit of luxury.
