Follow the Road to the Isles

Follow the Road to the Isles

The famous 'Road to the Isles' travels through some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery -from dramatic hills and moorland to sandy beaches, with breathtaking views to Skye and the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna.

Heading west from Fort William, the road passes through the village of Glenfinnian and its famous viaduct (as featured in Harry Potter The Chamber of Secrets), then skirts Loch Eilt to reach Lochailort.

Beyond here, you'll twist north past the spectacular sandy beaches of Arisaig and Morar, before ending in the fishing port of Mallaig, where you can spend the day soaking up the atmosphere in what used to be one of Europes biggest Herring Ports. You can also spot Scotland's sea creatures at the Mallaig Marine World.

Alternatively, you can catch the ferry here and do some exploring of the Small Isles and their extraordinary surroundings. Due to their small size it makes it possible to explore each of these island from coast to coast, with sandy beaches, rocky shores, volcanic peaks and basalt cliffs there's lots to be discovered on the Small Isles.

The ferry also sails to Skye from Mallaig and it's definitely worth a trip. Steeped in history the natural beauty of this Island has something for everyone. Its rugged landscape offers a wealth of activities from walking, wildlife spotting to fishing or simply sightseeing.
