Discover Mackintosh

Discover Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was known for using simple forms and natural materials. He successfully combined the flourish of Art Nouveau with the simplicity of Japanese forms. Today, many remarkable buildings and artworks in Glasgow bear the hallmarks of his style.

This year marks the centenary of the architect's masterpiece, the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art. To celebrate the build up to the centenary, Mackintosh 100 - a series of events, talks and tours - takes place at attractions throughout the city.

Highlights include the launch of the Mackintosh Experience Bus Tour in May, walking tours organised by the Charles Rennie Mackintosh society throughout the summer and a birthday party for Mackintosh in June to celebrate his 141st birthday!.

To understand Mackintosh's genius a visit to many of his attractions is recommended. House for an Art Lover in the wonderful Bellahouston Park is a masterpiece of modernity and is an exciting example of recent research of Glasgow's most influential architect. Be dazzled by the stunning music room with its pure white walls, arched windows and iconic high-back chairs.

The Lighthouse is in the centre of the city and the building was Mackintosh's first public commission. It is now an award winning centre of architecture and design. Scale the spiralling staircase in the Mackintosh Tower to the wonderful viewing platform over the city of Glasgow.

A day spent exploring the artwork of Mackintosh would not be complete without a visit to the Willow Tea Rooms, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea just as many Glaswegians did in the same rooms 100 years ago.
