Perfect days beyond the city
Any perfect break in Glasgow would not be complete without a day trip outside the city, where you can find any number of fascinating attractions and explore the beautiful countryside.
Visit the New Lanark World Heritage Site, a beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village in South Lanarkshire, close to the Falls of Clyde. The international cultural influence of his campaign for a better and fairer society is one of the criteria by which New Lanark was assessed by UNESCO as being worthy of World Heritage Status. The conservation village of New Lanark is also the gateway to the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve, which is owned and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. This oasis of tranquillity in a breathtaking setting is not to be missed.
Summerlee, the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, is a wonderful overview of Lanarkshire's contribution to the engineering world. Discover the iron-making process and get hands on with interactive displays. Jump on board Scotland's only working electric tramway and experience first hand the miners' every day working conditions in their recreated mine. After exploring the exhibition area, make sure you stop for a coffee at the museum café.
Take a tour of Glengoyne Distillery, considered one of the most beautiful distilleries in Scotland and the perfect place to relax and sample a dram of award-winning malt whisky. Within easy reach of Glasgow and the stunning environs of Loch Lomond, Glengoyne Distillery runs fantastic tours, including the Master Blender Session, where guests are invited to create their very own blended whisky!
Paisley Abbey is a former Cluniac monastery found at the banks of the White Cart River in the centre of Paisley. Now the town's parish kirk, the Abbey has been restored and boasts some beautiful examples of 19th and 20th Century stained glass.
