A Real Outdoor Experience

A Real Outdoor Experience

With a rugged landscape, varied terrain and over 500 miles of coastline to explore, dive head first into Orkney's huge variety of outdoor and adventure pursuits.

Whether you are looking for a tranquil setting full of great walks, scenic cycling routes and sandy beaches waiting to be discovered, or a day spent thrill-seeking amongst the islands' more extreme habitats, Orkney will not disappoint.

Experience Orkney's history first hand by diving down to the depths of Scapa Flow; a deep, natural harbour and home to countless wrecks to explore, including a sunken German fleet. Back on the surface, spend the day exploring the rocky outcrops and skerries by kayak which are unreachable by foot, and maybe find your own hidden beach. Paddling through inshore bays, keep a look out for seals popping up around you and, if you're lucky, perhaps even a friendly dolphin or two.

Back on dry land, the more remote islands of Orkney provide a rugged, untouched wilderness like nowhere else in Scotland. For the truly experienced and adventurous, the soaring sea cliffs of Hoy are home to 'The Old Man of Hoy': a formidable 137m climb that challenges even the most accomplished rock climbers.

Cycling is perhaps the best way to get out and see the real Orkney, providing an exhilarating day's exercise and a chance to sight-see en route. Take to the roads and find that perfect deserted beach or hill loch where you can stop for a picnic and take in the views. With excellent cycling access, low, rolling hills and routes between most significant historical sites and attractions, Orkney is the perfect place to come for a cycling break.
