Island Hopping

Island Hopping

Despite Mainland Orkney providing enough sights, experiences and flavours in itself to satisfy any visitor, don't miss out on the chance to explore any one of the outer islands that make up this archipelago.

Each island visited comes with its own unique experiences and why not take to the wilds for a Perfect Day of getting off the beaten path and into nature?

Known as 'The Queen of the Islands', Westray is a day out in itself. Whether you choose to be part of an organised tour, or indeed venture round it on foot or by bicycle or car, Westray encompasses all of Orkney's finest points in one island. The Westray Stone spiral rock carving can be seen in the Westray Heritage Centre, and puffins can be spotted crouched on the rocky, majestic Castle o' Burrian outcrop.

Further north than some parts of Norway, North Ronaldsay is the most extreme northerly point of Orkney, but without the expected biting winds, thanks to the temperate influence of the Gulf Stream. An island of strong Orcadian traditions, you'll find old Orkney surnames prevalent here, as well as local practices like the communal grazing of North Ronaldsay sheep on the beaches. Standing inland at about 13 feet tall, the solitary Stan Stane is one of Orkney's tallest standing stones, with a mysterious hole through its upper part providing a wealth of great local folklore.

Steeped in history, dating back to prehistoric and Viking times, Hoy should be on any visitor's itinerary. With Britain's only rock-cut chambered tomb, as well as the RSPB Hoy Nature Reserve, this hilly island is home to some of Orkney's greatest attractions; the perfect place to spend a day walking.
