Get Close to Nature
Though famous amongst bird watchers and nature lovers for its puffin and gannet colonies, the islands' ideal waters and rugged terrain also provide an exceptionally good environment for a huge variety of wildlife.
You needn't venture far to spot some of Orkney's local inhabitants; grey seals bask in the bays and on the skerries, and short-eared owls can be seen perched on hillsides watching island life go by.
World renowned for bird-spotting, Orkney is home to over 8,000 acres of habitat protected by the RSPB in the interests of preserving this unique and vibrant seabird breeding ground. From cliff top walks, see if you can spot corncrakes, pin-tails and red-throated divers, or strap up your boots and explore the moors and meadows of Hobbister to try and spot inland birds like curlews and golden plovers.
Recent sightings of visiting basking sharks come as no surprise to Orkney locals; the seas surrounding these exquisite islands have long provided a plentiful supply of wildlife to spot. Along with the irresistibly playful grey and common seals that can be watched enjoying themselves in the waves or lounging on the rocks, it's not uncommon for dolphins, porpoises and even humpback and orca whales to pass through these waters.
Venture deeper into the Orkney's interior and the full array of rich habitats to explore becomes clear, each with its own fauna and flora. The rare Primula Scotica, Scotland's Primrose, can only be found in a few of Scotland's maritime heaths, with Orkney providing the most bountiful collection. Whilst out and about, keep a look out for other seasonal flowers found throughout the islands, like Marsh Marigold, Coltsfoot and Flag Irises.
