Scotland’s Canals

Scotland’s Canals

The Caledonian Canal is truly the 'International Gateway' to cruising in Scotland. Stretching from Inverness to Fort William it is one of the great waterways of the world, offering visitors - afloat and ashore - spectacular scenery, amazing wildlife not to mention famous Scots hospitality.

Hotel barges can provide both activity holidays and a more relaxed cruise. The Caledonian offers excellent marina services for both the visitor and those seeking a cost-effective, long term berthing solution. This is without doubt one of Britain's most spectacular and scenic waterways. Don't miss the Caledonian Canal Celebration, which takes place from 14 - 21 June. This is a festival celebrating the contribution made by the Caledonian Canal to local communities and the long lasting benefits to vessels throughout its 200 year history.

Though only 14km in length, the Crinan Canal meanders through truly magnificent scenery which is rich in history. With many world class heritage sites, a designated wildlife reserve and miles of forest walks and cycle ways, the canal is the perfect route through the Clyde Estuary for exploring the islands off the west coast. It also travels through Kilmartin Glen, an area rich in history (pictish in particular) and wildlife, where there is much to see and do for all the family. Licenses are available from overnight to an annual package, which can include lift out during the winter months.

The Forth and Clyde Canal enables boats once more to sail between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. The canal passes by large, vibrant towns, busy thoroughfares and into peaceful country locations with any number of interesting places to visit. The world's only rotating boat lift - The Falkirk Wheel - connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, running from Edinburgh to Falkirk.
