Spot wildlife on a Galloway walk

Dumfries & Galloway is the perfect location for walkers; naturally inspiring with beautiful rolling hills and 200 miles of coastline. Explore the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve on the Solway Firth, which takes in Caerlaverock Castle, an impressive 13th-century castle set against the dramatic peak of Criffel.

Located by the Solway Firth, the Castle is sandwiched between the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve and a Nature Reserve managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, south of Dumfries in southwest Scotland. This area is an ideal for birdwatchers, acting as a roosting spot for many varied species of wildfowl and waders, as well as an important spot for visiting barnacle geese.

There's also a chance of spotting rare natterjack toads, tadpole shrimp and roe deer, as well as badgers from the nearby wood and otters which feed in nearby pools.

The walk takes you over the Merse marshland via a series of raised walkways and bridges, so be prepared for muddy conditions. From the Merse travel towards Nethertown and make your way back towards Caerlaverock Castle.

A visit to the Castle is a great addition to your day out.  A wonderful example of a medieval fortress, with a moat, twin towered gatehouse and imposing battlements, Caerlaverock is Britain's only triangular castle and offers a fascinating insight into the region's turbulent history.
