Glimpse wildlife in Galloway

Glimpse wildlife in Galloway

While Dumfries & Galloway is one of Scotland's most beautiful and accessible destinations it is also one of the least explored. Here you can discover forest walks, glorious gardens, beautiful beaches, and wildlife to rival anything further north.

Galloway is home to a wide range of rare and endangered species. Red squirrels find refuge in the quiet forests, red kites have been reintroduced to the Loch Ken area, and ospreys delight visitors to Wigtown.

In Dalbeattie Forest you can follow the waymarked Red Squirrel Walk which takes you to some of the places where you're most likely to see this endearing animal. Galloway is home to 20% of the Scottish population of red squirrels so you are more likely to see them here than anywhere else.

Or follow the Galloway Kite Trail, where you are almost guaranteed a sighting of the graceful red kite, once extinct in Scotland. The trail takes a circular route with observation points and interpretation boards. Visit the Bellymack Farm feeding station where up to 30 have been seen at once!

In Wigtown you can watch live CCTV coverage of ospreys, back in Galloway after over 100 years. Get an unparalleled view of ospreys sitting on their eggs and bringing up their young.

As well as being home to an abundance of wildlife Galloway is of course home to Cream O' Galloway ice cream, take a trip to the visitor centre while you are in the area and have a go at creating your own flavour!
