Spot wildlife in the Cairngorms

Everybody has an animal or bird they'd love to spot on a visit to Scotland. The towering mountains, ancient pine forests and sparkling lochs of the Highlands are home to an abundance of wildlife. And you don't have to travel to the wildernesses of the far north to see it. Around Aviemore and the Cairngorms you can see crossbill, crested tit, capercaillie, red squirrel, mountain hare, wildcat, and a whole lot more.

Visit the Highland Wildlife Park and discover Scotland's wildlife past and present. Drive through the main reserve then wander round the themed habitats encountering creatures along the way from badgers to bison, capercaille to lynx, wolves to wildcat.

Follow the waymarked trails through Glenmore Forest Park looking out for capercaillie then visit the nearby Glenmore Mountain Shop café and see red squirrels running and jumping on the branches and ropes.

On Rothiemurchus Estate, by Aviemore, countryside rangers will take you on a Land Rover safari giving you an insight into the lives of osprey, pine marten, capercailie, red squirrel and even Highland cattle.

You can also watch ospreys bring fish to their young from the RSPB hide on Loch Garten, see working sheepdog demonstrations at Leault Farm, visit the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre and, on the Moray Firth near Inverness, you can take a boat trip and spot seals and dolphins!

In the Highlands you can truly go wild and lose yourself amid the breathtaking landscape that is home to so many fascinating creatures.
